    PDP-led coalition not a merger – APP

Ugo-Chinyeri told News Agency of Nigeria in Abuja that the Coalition for United Political Parties (CUPP) was a timely action taken by 39 political parties in the interest of Nigerians.

He said that the alliance was not just to capture power, but to unify Nigerians as well as redeem the country from shambles.

“This is not a merger. It is a coalition of 39 political parties, including the leading opposition party, PDP, which share the same goal.

“It is not about capturing power, it is about the urgency to serve and save our motherland which is dancing at the edge of total economic and political eclipse,” he said.

Ugo-Chinyeri admitted that it was not an easy task getting together at this period, but stated that it was voluntary among the 39 political parties that were already set to put their energy and resources together.

He said that the parties’ decision to act now by forming the coalition was timely, adding that it would save the country from collapse.

He added that the parties were willing to sacrifice everything, especially the presidential slot in the 2019 general elections.

“The 39 political parties, including PDP, will bring forth a grand single presidential candidate.

“We will all queue to vote in that candidate and vote out the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC), ” the APP chairman said.

He explained that a significance of the alliance was the agreement and signing of Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) by all the parties to form a government of national unity to represent and unify Nigerians.

According to him, the coalition is needed to take Nigeria to its promised land and it will redeem and retrieve both the country and the people from the incompetency of APC and its leadership.

Ugo-Chinyeri said that the coalition was different from that of 2015, adding that the terms were clearly spelt out “and over time more details about its manifesto and other vital information will be disclosed’’.

He stressed that the coalition was driven by national interest and expressed hope that individual or party interest would not in the future set in to de-stabilise it.
He said that the coalition would secure 25 per cent appointment for youths from 18 years to 35 years, adding that it would also focus on respect for human right, security of the country and restructuring.

Ugo-Chinyeri urged Nigerians to get registered and collect Permanent Voter Card (PVC) in order to vote in the 2019 elections.

“Nigerians should observe the willingness behind this coalition.

“They should see the sacrifices the opposition has made and now is the time for them to go and collect their PVCs and join the coalition to root out incompetency,” he said.

He added that more news would be heard from the coalition even as more political parties were already indicating interest to join.

Bakare says 2011 run with Buhari broke barriers

Senior Pastor of Latter Rain Assembly and former Presidential running mate, Pastor Tunde Bakare has once again reminisced on the 2011 Presidential election where he contested with President Muhammadu Buhari under the defunct Congress for Progressive Change (CPC), saying being Buhari's running mate was not an easy task.

The fiery cleric recalled that he was then viewed by Church leaders as a traitor for accepting to run with Buhari who was believed to be an Islamic fundamentalist.

Bakare spoke in Lagos during the public presentation and launch of the Pendulum, a compendium of articles written by media mogul and Publishers of Ovation, Dele Momodu in honour of the acclaimed winner of the June 12 1993 election, Bashorun Moshood Kashimawo Abiola.

The ceremony is being attended by the crème de la crème of Nigeria. In the audience are Alhaji Razaq Okoya Thomas, Mr. Femi Otedola, Hajia Bola Shagaya, APC National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi among a long list of dignitaries.

Bakare in his keynote address said however the media represented by Dele Momodu, among other professionals contributed in changing the perception of Buhari and the story changed in 2015 with the pairing of Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, a Pastor of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) with Buhari as running mate.

According to him, the same church leaders who opposed his decision to contest with Buhari "ate their words" and supported Buhari/Osinbajo ticket in the 2015 election.

He said, "However I do not think the effort (in 2011) was in vain. Instead I thank God that I took up the challenge and became a barrier breaker.

"Yet four years later when the mantra became anything but Jonathan, the same church leaders who had said it was inconceivable for a pastor to participate in politics especially in an alignment with a perceived Islamic fundamentalist ate their words and threw their weight behind the same President Muhamamdu Buhari with my brother, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, and pastor of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) as running mate."

Commending the role played by the Nigerian press in shaping public opinion, he challenged the media men to, as Nigeria inches towards another election, redirect their pen towards the greatness of Nigeria.

"Spill the ink, not the blood", he said, adding the media should paint the picture of the nation every Nigerian desires.

Ekiti poll: Group trains persons with disabilities as observers

The Centre for Citizens with Disabilities (CCD) has trained forty five persons with disabilities (PWDs) from the 16 Local Government Areas of Ekiti State as election observers for the gubernatorial election holding in the state this Saturday.

In a statement on Thursday by its Executive Director, David O. Anyaele, it said the training was orgainsed in collaboration with the Joint National Associations of Persons with Disabilities (JONAPWD), Ekiti State Chapter.

“The training is part of the activities for the implementation of our Campaign for Equal Voting Access for Persons with Disabilities in Nigeria.

“The eventual long term goal of this intervention is that eligible citizens with disabilities are able to participate in the electoral process on equal bases with other citizens.

“Our objectives include to: mobilize citizens with disabilities’ participation in the gubernatorial election, observe and analyse compliance and produce evidence-based report on citizens with disabilities participation in the election, and raise awareness on equal voting rights for citizens with disabilities,” he said.
It will be recalled that CCD has been accredited as an election observer by Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for the July 14, 2018 Ekiti guber poll.

Similarly, the CCD and JONAPWD Ekiti State Chapter last month also launched the ‘Campaign for Equal Voting Access for Persons with Disabilities’ in Ekiti state.
Anyaele said that CCD and JONAPWD are working tirelessly to urge INEC to make polling units and ballot boxes more accessible for PWDs.

Other things the groups are advocating for include the use of sign language interpreters during all civic and voters’ education messaging on television; advocating for improvements in the distribution and reach of civic and voter education messages to citizens with different forms of disabilities; advocating for the use of braille IECs for civic and voters’ education at all levels and; advocating for an improvements in the capacity of election officials to assist PWDs vote on Election Day.

“CCD & JONAPWD are also working with other relevant stakeholders to change narratives and stereotypes about PWDs; contributing to the passage of National Disability Bill; amendment of section 56 of the Electoral Act 2015 as amended to hold INEC responsible for citizens with disabilities participation in the electoral process.

“CCD is greatly concerned at the level of marginalization of PWDs in the electoral process. This is because polling units are not always physically accessible to those with physical disabilities. The placement of ballot boxes on high tables or other inaccessible locations also make it difficult for PWD voters, especially those on wheel chairs to cast their ballots on Election Day.

“The absence of sign language interpreters during some civic and voter education and political campaign messages makes it impossible for voters who have hearing impairments (deaf voters) to benefit from the information being shared in these messages.

“Already CCD and JONAPWD Ekiti State Chapter paid an advocacy visits to INEC Resident Commissioner for Ekiti State, Prof. Abduganiy Raji and media Houses in Ado Ekiti.

“The purpose of the visit was to sensitize the stakeholders and bring to their awareness on the “Campaign for Equal Voting Access for Persons with Disabilities. We called for the inclusion of persons with disabilities in the electoral processes, deployment of electoral observers, training and reporting of outcomes in the July 14, 2018 Ekiti State Governorship Election,” he stated.
