    Clerics caution politicians against provocation

The Council of Imams and Ulamas in Kaduna State has condemned unguarded utterances by politicians who rain curses on their political opponents, describing such act as un-Islamic.

The social media was last week awash with a video recording in which Governor Nasir el-Rufai rained curses on senators Suleiman Hunkuyi, Shehu Sani and Danjuma Laah.

Addressing newsmen on series of issues in the state and the country at large, the chairman of the council, Sheikh Usman Abubakar Babantine and assistant secretary, Imam Musa Tanimu, who quoted from the Qur’an and Hadith, decried the attitude of some politicians who allegedly deployed all means, including foul language, to intimidate and demean their opponents.

Reading from a text, Babantine said, “The recent utterances by a leading politician from Kaduna State by use of harsh language, calling names and cursing political opponents is very unfortunate and may likely trigger violent actions, counter reactions and portends a lot of danger to the country.

“This type of political terrorism is against the teachings of Islam and contrary to the provisions of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and common sense,” he said.

The council also called on the Federal Government to adopt proactive implementation of the economic policies in agriculture, industry and manufacturing.

    Sheriff meets Buhari, evades journalists

A former governor of Borno State, Ali Modu Sheriff, yesterday met with President Muhammadu Buhari at Aso Rock Presidential Villa, Abuja.

The meeting, which held behind closed doors in the president’s office, lasted about one hour.

Sheriff, a former caretaker committee chairman of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), arrived the villa at about 2:40pm and left at 3:45pm.
After the meeting, Sheriff exchanged pleasantries with some state governors who had earlier attended a meeting of the National Economic Council (NEC) presided over by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo.

He, however, evaded State House correspondents who were waiting to know his mission to the villa.

This was Sheriff’s first meeting with President Buhari since he was ousted as PDP caretaker committee chairman.

He had met with Vice President Yemi Osinbajo at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on September 22, 2017.

The national leadership of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) had last month asked Sheriff, who had interest in joining the party in Abuja, to do so at his ward.

Oshiomhole gave the charge at the weekend in Benin when members of the newly elected state executive of the party led by its chairman, Anselm Ojezua, paid him a courtesy call.

Igbo leaders propose 6-year single term

The apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, has proposed a 6-year single term for president and governors as a panacea to the country’s political problem.
Presenting the resolutions at a one day summit on restructuring of the Nigerian federation, tagged, “Ekwueme Square Declaration 2018”, the Chairman, Planning and Strategy Committee, Prof. Charles Soludo, further called on the federal government to adopt the report of 2014 National conference.

The group also demanded for the creation of one more additional state for the South-East zone, as well as scrapping of local government system and resource control for states where natural resources were exploited.
He said the resolution already ratified by all the component arms of Ohaneze, equally demanded the re-drafting of the current constitution of Nigeria which he described as the product of military adulteration.
“Ohaneze demanded for the scrapping of state of origin and advocate its replacement with residential rights whereby a Nigerian has full right in any place he/she resides for ten years,” he said.
On the six-year-single tenure, the group noted that six vice presidents from each of the six geo-political zones should be elected, while the governorship seat should be rotated among the senatorial districts.
Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, also speaking said that he will sponsor a Bill on restructuring.

He said he was fully behind his colleagues from the southeast in adopting the position when presented at the National Assembly.

Also speaking, the President-General of Ohaneze Ndigbo, Chief John Nwodo, said the present constitution of the country was written to the disadvantage of the Igbo people, stressing that until significant changes were made, the Igbo people would not get fair treatment in the country.

Former Foreign Affairs Minister, Sen. Ike Nwachukwu, called on the people of Middle Belt to lend their support to the restructuring struggle by identifying with the South-East, South-South and South-West, as that would benefit them as well.

APC chair: Senators present grievances to Oshiomhole

Senators yesterday tabled their grievances before Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, a national chairmanship aspirant of the All Progressives Congress (APC) at a meeting held behind closed doors at the National Assembly.

Oshiomhole, a former governor of Edo State, met with the Senate caucus of the APC with the Senate president, Bukola Saraki in attendance. After the opening ceremony, they went into an executive session that lasted for about an hour.

Sources at the meeting said Oshiomhole was told that lack of fairness and justice had fragmented the party at both national and state levels.

“We told him that people who fought for the party are being harassed; there’s no reward for people who suffered for the party rather, those who did nothing for the emergence of this government are calling shots,” said one of the lawmakers in attendance.

He said the crises trailing the ward, local and state congresses of the party were also brought forward at the meeting.

“We also told him that the way and manner the outgoing members of the NWC of the party conducted the congresses is capable of sinking the party; it would lead to numerous litigations,” he said.

The source, a ranking lawmaker said one of his colleagues suggested that all members of the party occupying elective offices be granted automatic tickets for the success of the party at the poll.

Earlier, Oshiomhole said if voted as the national chairman of the party, he would do things differently.

“We cannot dream of a party in which there are no disagreements. If we have one like that, it means the party is not democratic. In a genuine democracy, nobody will seem to be able to get everything that he wants.

“But everybody can get everything that we are able to negotiate. And the driver of this process has to compromise. And when we approach matters with an open mind, we can do business. I am confident that working with leaders with open mind, all of these issues can be resolved.

“Having been a governor for eight years, I have some understanding between the legislature and the executive whether at the federal or state level. And therefore equipped with this experience, I believe that the party will not be a spectator or a ‘siddon look’ party while various arms of government are at each other’s throat.

“We have a common opponent that is not difficult to identify; and we all know who is our opponent. We cannot be opponents of ourselves.

“I believe that working and getting support from all of you, together we can rebrand our party, strengthen it, give it a more positive image, giving our owners a sense of ownership and participation and together we will confront the forthcoming election,” Oshiomhole reportedly said.

In his remark, Saraki reportedly said Oshiomhole possessed the capacity to take up the challenges facing the party.

The meeting came up less than two weeks after the nPDP led by Alhaji Baraje presented a letter containing similar grievances to the APC leadership and copied President Muhammadu Buhari and other senior government functionaries seeking redress.

real motives Oyegun withdrew from APC chairmanship race
The country wide Chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), chief John Odigie-Oyegun, shelved his ambition to run for the placement again after a meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari on Thursday night.

assets stated the APC governors had already informed the chief Odigie-Oyegun-led countrywide operating Committee (NWC) on the plan of President Buhari to assist the countrywide chairmanship ambition of a former governor of Edo kingdom, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, at a meeting held on the party secretariat last Wednesday.

however leader Odigie-Oyegun’s silence at the message delivered by using the governors from the president became now not enough to persuade them that he had given up the ambition of closing on the helms of affairs of the birthday celebration beyond the 2019 fashionable elections.

“What came about at the Wednesday assembly became that the governors conveyed facts on their assembly with the president,” one of the resources said.
“They told Oyegun that the president will be supporting Oshiomhole for the chairmanship position but there was no response from the chairman at that assembly,” he stated.

any other source stated that became whilst it have become glaring that President Buhari had to intervene; extra so there had been open altercations among key birthday party stakeholders on the national chairmanship function, especially after the APC nation and zonal meetings held in Edo country.

Penultimate Sunday, the Edo caucus of the APC led via the state chairman of the party, Barrister Anselm Ojezua, had subsidized Oshiomhole to vie for the placement of country wide chairman at a assembly in Benin.

however, his next endorsement by means of the South South zonal chapter of the APC polarised the celebration as four out of the six country chairmen of the birthday celebration from the area rejected him.

The nation chairmen that confounded him were leader Davies Ikanya (Rivers), Deacon Joseph Fafi (Bayelsa), Mr Etim John (pass River) and Dr Amadu Attai (Akwa Ibom), as well as the APC Deputy countrywide Secretary, Hon. Victor Giadom.
sooner or later, Oyegun additionally defined the purported endorsement of Oshiomhole by using the South-South zonal leadership of the party as “surely infantile.”

before his very last decision, Oyegun had the assist of a few APC governors, especially folks that believed that they could handiest manage the celebration structures of their country if he remained as countrywide chairman.

Oshiomhole’s candidacy become hitherto rejected by means of the governors who thought that the help he enjoyed from the countrywide leader of the birthday party, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, might not be properly for their various political pursuits.

Speak out against actions that threaten our democracy, Saraki charges Nigerians

The Senate President, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki, has urged Nigerians to speak out and guard against actions, statements and moves which can truncate the nation’s political journey.

Saraki made the charge on Tuesday via a statement signed by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Yusuph Olaniyonu.

He charged country men and women irrespective of ethnic, religious or political differences, not to take for granted the continued democratic dispensation the country has been enjoying for the past 19 years.

While congratulating Nigerians on the 2018 Democracy Day, the Senate President said the citizenry must ensure that government at all levels adhere strictly to the principles of rule of law, separation of powers, sovereignty of parliament, independence of the judiciary, and freedom of the press, noting that "our constitutional institutions must be preserved and protected".

The statement reads: "As we celebrate democracy today, I congratulate our people and express my conviction that this system of government is the best so far invented.

“However, it goes beyond the conduct of elections to put leaders in office. Democracy involves strict adherence to rule of law as against the rule of men. It is about respect for due process and following laid down procedures. It is about respect for and building of institutions.

"That is why we cannot be celebrating Democracy Day without canvassing for caution on some recent negative developments in our polity, particularly as we prepare for next year's general elections. These include abuse of office in a manner that suggests persecution and oppression of perceived enemies, stifling of free expression, undermining of democratic institutions, and impunity on the part of certain persons who behave as though they are above the laws of the land.

"These developments should be of concern to all democrats. Other political and opinion leaders who decided to veil their sight as if they are not seeing these infractions on democracy and choose to keep quiet, should know that they equally pose danger to the survival of our country.

"History will not be fair to us if we allow our complacency to jeopardize democracy. We all must be able to speak out with strong voice on issues that constitute a danger to democracy. Eternal vigilance, they say, is the price of liberty.

"At this point, let us remember and salute our heroes of democracy, those who toiled and paid different prices for us to have elected government, particularly, those who paid the ultimate price with their lives. Their labour shall definitely not be in vain.

"Also, it is important for us to quickly tackle all issues that can undermine our democracy, particularly insecurity and lack of good governance. We must immediately find solution to the security issues and ensure that we return the regime of peace, safety of lives and property in all parts of our country.
“In the same way, we must do all that is necessary to deliver good governance to our people and fight corruption at all levels. These challenges must be confronted by all political leaders devoid of party loyalty, ethnicity, religion and personal preferences. We must all set aside our personal interests and work as a collective on these aforementioned issues.

"It is equally necessary to warn that with the 2015 polls, we have set a very high standard in Africa. We cannot afford to perform less in 2019. The next general elections must be freer, fairer and more peaceful than the last one. Those responsible for conducting the polls must raise the bar and work to take Nigeria to a higher level of electoral process.

"It is important for all of us to note that Nigeria will continue to exist after the 2019 polls, just as the country is still here after the 2015 polls. We must therefore not do anything that will threaten the existence of the country or its peace, unity and tranquillity.

"Let me use this occasion to urge our all our people to avoid making and circulating hate speech which can further accentuate our fault lines and set one section of the country against the other. Rather, we should all embrace tolerance and the need to be our brother's keeper. We all have a lot to gain from a united and stronger Nigeria than having a nation embedded in conflict.

"As we celebrate Democracy Day, it is my wish that Nigerians will continue to enjoy good governance, provided by freely elected government and sustained by strong and impartial institutions, all of which will lead to the creation of a developed society with the citizens freely enjoying a high standard of living."
